LA.HORDE

LA.HORDE Marseille Ballet Company

For three months during the pandemic, I immersed myself in the world of La Horde - Marseille's trailblazing contemporary ballet company. Spending five days a week in their bustling studio, I got an intimate look at the incredible artistry and personalities driving this provocative dance collective.

From this body of work I made a series of limited edition of 10 handmade books available from Yvon Lambert, Paris and this edit for NAFF magazine issue 002, which you will find below.

Beyond capturing their mind-blowing performances merging precise technique with powerful improvisation, I aimed my lens at the raw, unguarded moments. The quiet interactions and deep camaraderie binding these dancers as they pushed their bodies to the limits, learning new avant-garde choreography with an intensity and synchronicity that was mesmerizing.

This was a fleeting window into their lives before inevitable career moves inevitably part them. The hard work, control, and seamless flow between one another - both onstage and off - was humbling to witness up close. Observing them in the studio dissolved the boundary between art and life.

But this project extended beyond La Horde's rehearsal grind. With Marseille's artistic renaissance drawing creatives from Paris, London, and New York during lockdowns, I immersed myself in the company's whirlwind homebase. A vibrant, gritty space where dancers' eclectic lives intertwine with the city's frenetic arts scene.
